Polar tongue of ionisation during geomagnetic superstorm

چکیده
Abstract. During the main phase of geomagnetic storms, large positive ionospheric plasma density anomalies arise at middle and polar latitudes. A prominent example is tongue ionisation (TOI), which extends poleward from dayside storm-enhanced (SED) anomaly, often crossing cap streaming with convection flow into nightside ionosphere. fragmentation TOI anomaly contributes to formation patches partially responsible for scintillations satellite positioning signals high To investigate this intense numerical simulations neutral dynamics during superstorm 20 November 2003 are performed using Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics Global Circulation Model (TIE-GCM) coupled statistical parameterisation high-latitude convection. The simulation results reproduce features consistently observations total electron content tomography, published previously by authors. It demonstrated that fast uplift, due electric expanded subauroral mid-latitudes, serves as a primary feeding mechanism while complex interplay between electrodynamic wind transports shown contribute mid-latitude SED anomaly. This contrasts relatively smaller where impact on appears more pronounced. suggested better representation superstorms needed. discussed in context space weather modelling.

Unusual strong quasi-monochromatic ground Pc5 geomagnetic pulsations in the recovery phase of November 2003 superstorm
Unusually large-amplitude morning Pc5 magnetic pulsations during the recovery phase of the huge magnetic storm in November 2003 have been studied by using ground-based multi-point observations. Two main spectral Pc5 enhancements were observed: at f≈2 mHz, which featured slowly increasing frequency with decreasing latitude, and at f≈3 mHz, which was latitude independent. The Pc5 pulsations were ...
متن کاملPolar mesosphere summer echo strength in relation to solar variability and geomagnetic activity during 1997–2009
This paper is based on measurements of Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) with the 52 MHz radar ESRAD, located near Kiruna, in Northern Sweden, during the summers of 1997–2009. Here, a new independent calibration method allowing estimation of possible changes in antenna feed losses and transmitter output is described and implemented for accurate calculation of year-to-year variations of PMSE...
متن کاملMeasurement of indoor and outdoor radon concentrations during Superstorm Sandy.
Superstorm Sandy affected much of the US East Coast extending over 1800 km. It passed over the test location in the State of Maryland on 29 October 2012. Being 350 km away from the regions of highest intensity the storm was of lower intensity at the test location. Continuous radon monitors and passive radon monitors were used for the measurement. The test location was the basement of a single f...
متن کاملIonospheric redistribution during geomagnetic storms
[1]The abundance of plasma in the daytime ionosphere is often seen to grow greatly during geomagnetic storms. Recent reports suggest that the magnitude of the plasma density enhancement depends on the UT of storm onset. This possibility is investigated over a 7year period using global maps of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) produced at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The analysis confir...
